How to Stop Snoring: What Actually Works

How To Stop Snoring: What Actually Works

Snoring is one of the most searched sleep problems in India, and most advice treats it as one problem with one fix. It isn't. Snoring is the sound of air vibrating soft tissue in a narrowed airway – and where that narrowing happens decides which fix works.

So the honest answer to "how do I stop snoring" starts with a different question: why are
you snoring?

Step 1: Work out your snoring type

Mouth snoring – your mouth falls open and the soft palate vibrates. Partners often
say it sounds "flappy". You may wake with a dry mouth.Nose snoring – a blocked or narrow nose forces turbulent airflow. Worse with colds,
allergies or dust.
Tongue-base snoring – the tongue falls back when you lie flat. Usually worst on
your back.
Snoring with pauses and gasps – a possible sign of sleep apnoea, which needs a
doctor, not a hack.
A simple test: try to snore with your mouth closed. If you can't, you're likely a mouth
snorer. If you snore mainly on your back, position is a big lever.

Step 2: Match the fix to the cause

If you snore on your back: side sleeping is one of the most reliable fixes. A body pillow
behind your back, or a tennis-ball-in-a-pocket trick on an old T-shirt, keeps you from
rolling over.
If you're a mouth snorer: encouraging nasal breathing helps. This is where mouth tape
is used – a gentle strip that keeps lips closed so your nose does the work. It only makes
sense if your nose is clear.
If your nose is blocked: treat the nose first. Saline rinses, a steam session before bed,
washing pillow covers for dust mites and managing allergies with a doctor's advice all
help.
If weight has gone up recently: extra tissue around the neck narrows the airway. Even
modest weight loss often reduces snoring volume.

Step 3: Remove the things that make it worse

Alcohol within 3 hours of bed relaxes throat muscles – one of the strongest
snoring triggers.
Sedating medicines can do the same; ask your doctor if snoring started with a new
prescription.
Smoking inflames the airway lining.
Irregular sleep – overtired sleep is deeper and floppier, and snoring gets louder.

What doesn't work as well as advertised

Nose clips, magnetic rings and "anti-snoring drops" sell well in India. Evidence for most
is thin. Nasal strips can help nose snorers but do little for mouth or tongue snoring –
again, it comes back to type.

When to see a doctor

See a doctor or sleep specialist if your partner notices breathing pauses, you wake
gasping, you're sleepy during the day despite a full night, or you have high blood
pressure. These can be signs of obstructive sleep apnoea, which is common and under-
diagnosed in India.
