How to Stop Snoring Naturally: 8 Fixes to Try First
Before devices, drops or doctors, most people can reduce snoring with free or low-cost
changes. These eight fixes are ranked roughly by how much evidence and real-world
impact they have.
1. Sleep on your side
The single most effective natural fix for positional snorers. Put a firm pillow behind your
back, or sew a tennis ball into the back of an old T-shirt so lying on your back becomes
uncomfortable. Most people adapt within two weeks.
2. Raise your head slightly
An extra pillow or a wedge that lifts the head and upper chest by 10–15 cm can reduce
airway collapse. Lift the torso, not just the neck, or you'll kink your airway instead.

3. Clear your nose before bed
A saline rinse or a five-minute steam session opens the nasal passages. Wash pillow
covers weekly in hot water to cut dust mites – a major trigger in Indian homes.
4. Cut alcohol in the evening
Stop drinking at least three hours before bed. For many people this alone turns loud
snoring into light snoring.
5. Keep your mouth closed
For mouth snorers, keeping the lips closed encourages nasal breathing. Practise during
the day, and at night consider a gentle hydrogel mouth tape such as Shut It – only if you
can breathe comfortably through your nose.

6. Try throat and tongue exercises
Studies of oropharyngeal exercises – repeated tongue presses against the roof of the
mouth, singing vowel sounds, chewing exercises – show modest reductions in snoring
when done daily for about three months. Free, but it takes consistency.
7. Manage weight gradually
If snoring started with weight gain, losing even part of it often helps by reducing pressure
on the airway.
8. Keep a regular sleep schedule
Overtired sleep is deeper and floppier. Consistent bed and wake times keep snoring
from spiking after short nights.
What about home remedies?
Turmeric milk, honey and peppermint oil are popular in India. They're harmless for most
people and may soothe a sore throat, but there's little evidence they reduce snoring itself.
When natural isn't enough
If you've tried these for a month without change, or there are signs of breathing pauses,
see a doctor. Snoring with daytime sleepiness should be checked for sleep apnoea.
